Top Republicans in the U.S. Congress are considering imposing conditions on disaster aid to Los Angeles communities devastated by wildfires, after President-elect Donald Trump claimed that state and local officials had mishandled the situation.

House Speaker Mike Johnson is one of many Republicans who have sought to blame state and local officials for the deadly wildfires in Los Angeles.

California and other Democratic-controlled states would need to atone for “bad behavior” if they wanted federal assistance, one lawmaker said.

"House Democrats are willing to roll up our sleeves and to stay here as long as possible, to have the conversations, but at the end of the day, ultimately this will mean disaster assistance and that needs to be free from partisan conditions,

Congressional Republicans have picked up on Donald Trump's animosity toward the state of California and are now suggesting that any federal aid to help in the recovery from historic, deadly, devastating fires should come with conditions as well as political strings attached.
