Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara provided comments on the consent decree that was passed by the Minneapolis City Council Monday.

A federal probe found the Minneapolis Police Department engaged in systematic discrimination and had a pattern of violating residents' constitutional rights. A new agreement between the city and the DOJ hopes to fix it.

The Minneapolis City Council voted in favor of the proposed consent decree between the Department of Justice and the City of Minneapolis during a closed hearing session on Monday,

The consent decree has been anticipated since June 2023, when a DOJ investigation following the police murder of George Floyd found MPD used “unjustified deadly force” and engaged in racial discrimination for years, violating the U.S. Constitution.
