The Met Office has issued a fresh warning for snow and ice as wintry weather continued to disrupt the first week back to school in parts of Scotland. More than 50 schools in the Highlands have been affected on Wednesday,

Scotland is continuing to be hit by freezing weather, with rain, sleet and snow expected to fall across large parts of the country. Temperatures at Loch Glascarnoch in the Highlands fell to -11C on Saturday night after forecasters extended a yellow warning from 09:00 on Sunday until 12:00 on Monday.

This week is expected to see the coldest nights of the year, with temperatures potentially reaching -16C on Thursday night. An amber warning for snow is in place in the south west of England until 9pm this evening.

Forecasters warn of difficult driving conditions as workers and school pupils return after the Christmas break.

The Met Office has updated its weather warnings for snow across southern England as the Southeast, Southwest and London braced for the white stuff. The updated warnings run from 9.00am today until 11.
