Food and gasoline prices are rising again as US inflation picked up broadly at the start of the year, with economists warning President Donald Trump’s tariffs against China, on steel imports and potentially against huge trading partners Canada and Mexico will only accelerate the trend.

Diesel costs across the country rose at a marginal rate during the second week of February, while gas prices ticked up an average of 4 cents to remain above $3 per gallon.

According to Gas Buddy, the average price in Phoenix is now $3.60 per gallon, a 23-cent increase in less than a week. Gas Buddy says the big reason for this is several California refineries are running into maintenance problems.

The average price of gasoline has generally increased in Burlington and across the state. Burlington’s price per gallon increased by 1.1 cents. On February 9 the cheapest gas per gallon in Burlington was $3.

Gas prices increased $.07 from last week in Michigan, with people paying a state average of $3.10 per gallon for regular unleaded. A month ago, gas prices were $.03 more but still $.12 less compared to this time last year.

US wholesale prices rose in January by more than forecast on higher food and energy costs, adding to the growing pile of bad inflation news ahead of more potential tariffs threatened by the Trump administration.
