Protesters displayed a banner calling Myanmar's junta chief a "murderer" as he joined a regional summit in Bangkok on Friday, a week after a huge earthquake killed thousands, leaving desperate survivors pleading for food and shelter.

BEIJING -- The Chinese government dispatched the second batch of emergency humanitarian earthquake relief supplies to Myanmar from Beijing Capital International Airport on Thursday morning, according to the China International Development Cooperation Agency.

As U.S. experts head to Myanmar to assist in recovery from the Southeast Asia earthquake, teams from China are filling the void.

A second batch of disaster-relief supplies from the Chinese government arrived in Yangon on Thursday after a 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on March 28.

The number of fatalities following a major earthquake is expected to surpass 3,000. At the same time, rescue workers were able to save a man from the rubble five days after the quake.

There is only skeletal infrastructure along the mountainous and sparsely populated Kachin-India frontier, making it challenging for commodities to be moved from Myanmar to the neighbouring northeastern states of India. Those states are also far removed from India's manufacturing belts in the south and west.
