USAID, a decades-old organization that provides humanitarian aid to over 130 countries, now faces an uncertain future.

Staffers at the U.S. Agency for International Development were told the agency’s main building in Washington was closed on Monday and they should work from home. The email came early Monday morning, soon after tech mogul and President Donald Trump ally Elon Musk said he had spoken to the president, who agreed to close down the agency.

Elon Musk called USAID a criminal organization that should “die.” Proponents say it’s a key arm of U.S. influence that, if destroyed, “cannot be easily rebuilt.”

The USAID systems the DOGE team tried to access included personnel files, three sources familiar with the events told NBC News.
