Gov. Ron DeSantis is in a standoff with Florida's legislative leaders that has devolved into a test of his power and influence over the state. At issue: a slate of immigration reforms that lawmakers named after President Trump and approved in place of DeSantis' own proposals.

Among other things, legislative leaders want to remove the governor’s ability to declare state of emergencies over immigration.

In a special session on Monday, leaders seemed to be declaring their independence from a governor who has wielded so much power that legislative sessions have become largely predictable rubber stamps.
